The Philadelphia Education Crisis: Past, Present, and Future

The Penn Political Coalition, Penn Political Review, Civic House Associates Coalition, Penn Education Society, and Undergraduate Assembly jointly hosted a panel of three distinguished faculty speakers who discussed the Philadelphia education budget crisis and recent school closings in the community. The panel consisted of Dr. Elaine Simon (Urban Studies Department), Dr. Rand Quinn (Graduate School of Education), and Dr. Lia Howard (Political Science Department). The speakers discussed the politics behind the school closings and tightening education budgets as well as opportunities for students to get involved in the community in the form of advocacy and service. PoCo’s Co-Chair Urja Mittal moderated the panel.

An Evening with Brooke Gladstone

The Penn Political Coalition welcomed NPR’s Brooke Gladstone, host of On the Media and author of The New York Times bestseller The Influencing Machine, to speak about the intersection of media and politics. One of today’s most lauded media analysts, Gladstone spoke about how radio, television, and the news have developed over time and what the future may bring. Dr. Joseph Turow moderated the discussion with students and members of the Penn community.
